Is this Ethical?

Because I was having a very stressful day, I decided to get out the ole paints and brushes and a canvas I had on hand and do something creative!.......So this is what I did. I copied a painting by the French artist, Cezanne, and my question to you is....is that ETHICAL or is it Legal??? I won't be selling it that is for sure and now have it framed and on the wall in the breakfast room......It's not a perfect copy; in fact, it is pretty imperfect as far as I am concerned. I told my sister, who is a wonderful artist, not to laugh at my attempt and she said, "Why would I laugh?".....and then she called it a LEEzanne!...pretty clever little sis she is!
Lazy Sunday afternoon watching GUSTAV approach the Gulf.......stay safe all and God Bless AMerica!

This post hits home to me as my father is one of the great art forger's of the last century. His name is David Stein. Look him up on wikipedia. Great job on the painting and thanks for the comment.

P.S. It's ethical as long as you don't sign his name ( just sign your name and "in the style of Cezanne" right next to it. Trust me I know all about it :)

For many years... including Cezanne... artist have been making REPRODUCTIONS of artist before them... it is a way of learning technique... Imitation is the sincerous form of flattery!
The Louvre gives out passes to artist to copy paintings in their galleries.
You may sell these creations, but you may NOT sell them as originals. Enjoy your REPRODUCTION... it's lovely... my house is FILLED with Matisse reproductions!
Thank you for visiting my site... nice to meet you!

What a great job you did on your painting! I agree with everything Fifi said, too, about making reproductions. Keep doing it! :)

Nice work! It IS ethical, since you are not claiming it's an original and you are not selling it as such. Enjoyed visiting your blog!

Hi Mimi
I just had a look through your blog and I chose this post to comment on. Lots of artists copy others as an exercise. Its OK!
The blog you looked at was just my practice one, not my actual real one! Glad you liked it though.
